More About Jesus – The King
Jesus is the King. When a person gets saved, they gain a lot more than eternal salvation. They get a new family. They become a child of God instead of being a child of the Devil. When you get saved you enter into a relationship with God. In the Bible this relationship is likened to a Shepherd and his sheep. And most get excited about that; a great, almighty, loving Shepherd who is ever watching out for us, providing for us and guiding us. But that is not the extent of this new relationship. It also has another dimension. A dimension that many Christians do not get excited about. In fact many today try to ignore it altogether. Jesus is not only Shepherd, He is also King.
I That He is King was foretold
Num 24:17 I shall see him, but not now: I shall behold him, but not nigh: there shall come a Star out of Jacob, and a Sceptre shall rise out of Israel, and shall smite the corners of Moab, and destroy all the children of Sheth.
Psa 2:6 Yet have I set my king upon my holy hill of Zion.
Isa 9:7 Of the increase of [his] government and peace [there shall be] no end, upon the throne of David, and upon his kingdom, to order it, and to establish it with judgment and with justice from henceforth even for ever. The zeal of the LORD of hosts will perform this.
Jer 23:5 Behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that I will raise unto David a righteous Branch, and a King shall reign and prosper, and shall execute judgment and justice in the earth.
Mic 5:2 But thou, Bethlehem Ephratah, [though] thou be little among the thousands of Judah, [yet] out of thee shall he come forth unto me [that is] to be ruler in Israel; whose goings forth [have been] from of old, from everlasting.
That Jesus would be King was not an after thought. It was planned out long ago. He is the center point in all history. Man cannot change the fact that everything is moving toward Jesus sitting on a literal throne on this earth.
II Qualities of His Kingship
a. Glorious
Psa 24:7 Lift up your heads, O ye gates; and be ye lift up, ye everlasting doors; and the King of glory shall come in.
Psa 24:8 Who [is] this King of glory? The LORD strong and mighty, the LORD mighty in battle.
Psa 24:9 Lift up your heads, O ye gates; even lift [them] up, ye everlasting doors; and the King of glory shall come in.
Psa 24:10 Who is this King of glory? The LORD of hosts, he [is] the King of glory. Selah.
1Co 2:8 Which none of the princes of this world knew: for had they known [it], they would not have crucified the Lord of glory.
Jam 2:1 My brethren, have not the faith of our Lord Jesus Christ, [the Lord] of glory, with respect of persons.
Earthy kings are a mess. They try to array themselves in glory, but it is only a bunch of pomp with no true glory. Jesus is quite different. He is the Lord of glory. True glory. Sinless perfect glory. It is truly going to be something to see.
b. Supreme
Psa 89:27 Also I will make him [my] firstborn, higher than the kings of the earth.
Rev 1:5 And from Jesus Christ, [who is] the faithful witness, [and] the first begotten of the dead, and the prince of the kings of the earth. Unto him that loved us, and washed us from our sins in his own blood,
Rev 19:16 And he hath on [his] vesture and on his thigh a name written, KING OF KINGS, AND LORD OF LORDS.
Jesus is not just a king. He is THE KING. The phrase KING OF KINGS, AND LORD OF LORDS is a way of stating that He is above them all. He is over all. He is the one who rules all others. No one is above Him. No matter how much power an earthly king has, he must bow to Jesus. He is the KING OF KINGS.
c. Has a righteous kingdom
Psa 45:6 Thy throne, O God, [is] for ever and ever: the sceptre of thy kingdom [is] a right sceptre.
Heb 1:8 But unto the Son [he saith], Thy throne, O God, [is] for ever and ever: a sceptre of righteousness [is] the sceptre of thy kingdom.
Heb 1:9 Thou hast loved righteousness, and hated iniquity; therefore God, [even] thy God, hath anointed thee with the oil of gladness above thy fellows.
Isa 32:1 Behold, a king shall reign in righteousness, and princes shall rule in judgment.
Jer 23:5 Behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that I will raise unto David a righteous Branch, and a King shall reign and prosper, and shall execute judgment and justice in the earth.
O’ how a Christian longs for Jesus to come and reign. He will right all the wrongs. He will reign in perfect righteousness. Because Jesus is sinless and perfect, He will never make a mistake in ruling. He will have a righteous kingdom.
d. Has everlasting kingdom
Dan 2:44 And in the days of these kings shall the God of heaven set up a kingdom, which shall never be destroyed: and the kingdom shall not be left to other people, [but] it shall break in pieces and consume all these kingdoms, and it shall stand for ever.
Dan 7:14 And there was given him dominion, and glory, and a kingdom, that all people, nations, and languages, should serve him: his dominion [is] an everlasting dominion, which shall not pass away, and his kingdom [that] which shall not be destroyed.
Luk 1:33 And he shall reign over the house of Jacob for ever; and of his kingdom there shall be no end.
Jesus is already king in His position. He is just waiting for His timing to start the physical earthy kingdom. And He will never stop reigning. It is true that the 1,000 years will end, and Satan will be thrown in the lake of fire. But Jesus will still reign for all eternity.
III The fact that Jesus is The King is Acknowledged by
a. His followers
Luk 19:38 Saying, Blessed [be] the King that cometh in the name of the Lord: peace in heaven, and glory in the highest.
Joh 12:13 Took branches of palm trees, and went forth to meet him, and cried, Hosanna: Blessed [is] the King of Israel that cometh in the name of the Lord.
Joh 1:49 Nathanael answered and saith unto him, Rabbi, thou art the Son of God; thou art the King of Israel.
They knew Jesus is the king. They told Him so. And Jesus did not rebuke them. He accepted the title. Christians who are walking close to Jesus also readily acknowledge that He is King.
b. The wise men from the east
Mat 2:2 Saying, Where is he that is born King of the Jews? for we have seen his star in the east, and are come to worship him.
The wise men acknowledged that Jesus was the promised King. Don’t take what they did lightly. They traveled for a long time just to bow before Him. And at that time that kind of trip was not easy. It was hard and it was dangerous. But they understood that bowing before the king was worth it all.
c. Declared by himself
Mat 25:31 When the Son of man shall come in his glory, and all the holy angels with him, then shall he sit upon the throne of his glory:
Mat 25:32 And before him shall be gathered all nations: and he shall separate them one from another, as a shepherd divideth [his] sheep from the goats:
Mat 25:33 And he shall set the sheep on his right hand, but the goats on the left.
Mat 25:34 Then shall the King say unto them on his right hand, Come, ye blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world:
Joh 18:37 Pilate therefore said unto him, Art thou a king then? Jesus answered, Thou sayest that I am a king. To this end was I born, and for this cause came I into the world, that I should bear witness unto the truth. Every one that is of the truth heareth my voice.
Jesus declared that He is coming back as King. And that He will sit upon the throne of his glory. Notice it is his glory. He does not have to borrow or manufacture glory for this throne. The throne does not give Him glory. The glory does not come from the throne. It is the other way around. It is His glory.
d. Acknowledged by His enemies
Joh 19:19 And Pilate wrote a title, and put [it] on the cross. And the writing was, JESUS OF NAZARETH THE KING OF THE JEWS.
This truth is so undeniable that His enemies will declare Him as King. They did it on the cross. You might say, but millions of His enemies today do not. O’ but they will. One day every knee will bow.
IV One day His Kingdom will be on the earth.
a. The One Thousand Year reign
At this time His kingdom not of this world
Joh 18:36 Jesus answered, My kingdom is not of this world: if my kingdom were of this world, then would my servants fight, that I should not be delivered to the Jews: but now is my kingdom not from hence.
There are groups who are teaching that we must establish His Kingdom on this earth. They are clearly teaching against the Word of God. But one day He will establish a literal Kingdom on the earth.
Rev 20:4 And I saw thrones, and they sat upon them, and judgment was given unto them: and [I saw] the souls of them that were beheaded for the witness of Jesus, and for the word of God, and which had not worshipped the beast, neither his image, neither had received [his] mark upon their foreheads, or in their hands; and they lived and reigned with Christ a thousand years.
Rev 20:6 Blessed and holy [is] he that hath part in the first resurrection: on such the second death hath no power, but they shall be priests of God and of Christ, and shall reign with him a thousand years.
Rev 11:15 And the seventh angel sounded; and there were great voices in heaven, saying, The kingdoms of this world are become [the kingdoms] of our Lord, and of his Christ; and he shall reign for ever and ever.
This kingdom will last 1,000 years. At the end Satan will be set loose for a short season, lead a revolt and then be thrown into the lake of fire. Then eternity will be ushered in, and we will be with Him in the heavenly city for evermore. No more sin, no more pain, no more crying. It is going to be wonderful.
b. This kingdom will be over all
Psa 2:8 Ask of me, and I shall give [thee] the heathen [for] thine inheritance, and the uttermost parts of the earth [for] thy possession.
Psa 72:8 He shall have dominion also from sea to sea, and from the river unto the ends of the earth.
Zec 14:9 And the LORD shall be king over all the earth: in that day shall there be one LORD, and his name one.
Rev 11:15 And the seventh angel sounded; and there were great voices in heaven, saying, The kingdoms of this world are become [the kingdoms] of our Lord, and of his Christ; and he shall reign for ever and ever.
There will be nowhere that He does not rule. None can withstand Him. None can escape His eye. Jesus sees all and hears all and knows all, and He has all power. Jesus is over all.
c. Jesus will sit on the throne of David
Isa 9:7 Of the increase of [his] government and peace [there shall be] no end, upon the throne of David, and upon his kingdom, to order it, and to establish it with judgment and with justice from henceforth even for ever. The zeal of the LORD of hosts will perform this.
Luk 1:32 He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Highest: and the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of his father David:
God keeps all of His promises. The humanity of Jesus came thru the line of David.
d. The throne will be in Jerusalem
Psa 2:6 Yet have I set my king upon my holy hill of Zion.
Zec 9:9 Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion; shout, O daughter of Jerusalem: behold, thy King cometh unto thee: he [is] just, and having salvation; lowly, and riding upon an ass, and upon a colt the foal of an ass.
Mat 21:5 Tell ye the daughter of Sion, Behold, thy King cometh unto thee, meek, and sitting upon an ass, and a colt the foal of an ass.
The 1,000 year reign will be ruled from Jerusalem. 1. Because that is where David’s throne was so it more literally fulfills God’s promise that Jesus would sit on the throne of David. 2. Because Jerusalem is the place that God decided to put His name. It will fulfill that promise as well.
e. At that time He shall overcome all His enemies
Psa 110:1 <A Psalm of David.> The LORD said unto my Lord, Sit thou at my right hand, until I make thine enemies thy footstool.
Mar 12:36 For David himself said by the Holy Ghost, The LORD said to my Lord, Sit thou on my right hand, till I make thine enemies thy footstool.
1Co 15:25 For he must reign, till he hath put all enemies under his feet.
Rev 17:14 These shall make war with the Lamb, and the Lamb shall overcome them: for he is Lord of lords, and King of kings: and they that are with him [are] called, and chosen, and faithful.
And make no mistake. It will not be difficult for Him. He will not even break a sweat. He will open His mouth and game over as the saying goes.
f. Saints receive a kingdom from
Luk 22:29 And I appoint unto you a kingdom, as my Father hath appointed unto me;
Luk 22:30 That ye may eat and drink at my table in my kingdom, and sit on thrones judging the twelve tribes of Israel.
Heb 12:28 Wherefore we receiving a kingdom which cannot be moved, let us have grace, whereby we may serve God acceptably with reverence and godly fear:
Rev 5:10 And hast made us unto our God kings and priests: and we shall reign on the earth.
Jesus can rule all by Himself if He choose to. He has all power. It is a privilege that He is going to let His own reign with Him.
IV We are to acknowledge Him as our personal King and live accordingly.
a. Saints the subjects of
Col 1:13 Who hath delivered us from the power of darkness, and hath translated [us] into the kingdom of his dear Son:
Rev 15:3 And they sing the song of Moses the servant of God, and the song of the Lamb, saying, Great and marvellous [are] thy works, Lord God Almighty; just and true [are] thy ways, thou King of saints.
Jesus is The King. We are His subjects. He is not Santa Claus. The tail is not to wag the dog. He is our King. That means somethings. That has real practical application to our everyday lives. We are to view Him as King and therefore obey Him.
b. The motivation for obeying our King.
Joh 14:15 If ye love me, keep my commandments.
Jesus said, “If ye love me, keep my commandments.” He made a connection between love and obeying.
Make no mistake Jesus is King. He is over all. But He gives each and every one of us the free will to make Him King of our life or not.
Have you made Him King? I mean in a real practical way. In all areas of your life?
Each one of us should for He is worthy. He has done so much for us. We should make Him king in our life and the motivator for doing this needs to be love.
