Jesus In Psalm 2

It has already been established that Jesus is in the Psalms and that Jesus is in the Psalms by type and directly.  So now let’s start to look and some of the Psalms and compare them to what happens in the New Testament.  There is no doubt that we see Jesus in Psalm 2.

The Messiah Foretold to be Rejected by Gentiles

Psalm 2:1 Why do the heathen rage, and the people imagine a vain thing?

We see this happen in Acts 4:25-28  The New Testament quotes Psalm 2:1 and makes application that it was talking about Jesus.

Acts 4:25  Who by the mouth of thy servant David hast said, Why did the heathen rage, and the people imagine vain things? 26The kings of the earth stood up, and the rulers were gathered together against the Lord, and against his Christ. 27For of a truth against thy holy child Jesus, whom thou hast anointed, both Herod, and Pontius Pilate, with the Gentiles, and the people of Israel, were gathered together, 28For to do whatsoever thy hand and thy counsel determined before to be done.

The Messiah Foretold to be Conspired against by Kings and Rulers

Psalm 2:2 The kings of the earth set themselves, and the rulers take counsel together, against the LORD, and against his anointed, saying,

We also see this in Acts 4:26 -28 where Herod and Pontius Pilate rejected Jesus.

The Messiah Foretold to be Called King

Psalm 2:6 Yet have I set my king upon my holy hill of Zion.

We see this in John 12:12 On the next day much people that were come to the feast, when they heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem, 13 Took branches of palm trees, and went forth to meet him, and cried, Hosanna: Blessed is the King of Israel that cometh in the name of the Lord.

And we see it when Pilate wrote it on a sign.

Mark 15:26 And the superscription of his accusation was written over, THE KING OF THE JEWS.

And also in Matt 2:2 Saying, Where is he that is born King of the Jews? for we have seen his star in the east, and are come to worship him.

The Messiah would be the Son of God

Psalm 2:7 I will declare the decree: the LORD hath said unto me, Thou art my Son; this day have I begotten thee.

We see this one many times.

Luke 1:31 And, behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a son, and shalt call his name JESUS. 32 He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Highest: and the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of his father David: 33 And he shall reign over the house of Jacob for ever; and of his kingdom there shall be no end.

Also in Luke we see that he is also King Psalm 2:6

Heb 1:5 For unto which of the angels said he at any time, Thou art my Son, this day have I begotten thee? And again, I will be to him a Father, and he shall be to me a Son? 6 And again, when he bringeth in the firstbegotten into the world, he saith, And let all the angels of God worship him.

Romans 1:3 Concerning his Son Jesus Christ our Lord, which was made of the seed of David according to the flesh; 4And declared to be the Son of God with power, according to the spirit of holiness, by the resurrection from the dead:

Jesus Revealed That He is The Son of God

Psalm 2:7 I will declare the decree: the LORD hath said unto me, Thou art my Son; this day have I begotten thee.

Jesus revealed it in John 9:35 Jesus heard that they had cast him out; and when he had found him, he said unto him, Dost thou believe on the Son of God? 36 He answered and said, Who is he, Lord, that I might believe on him? 37 And Jesus said unto him, Thou hast both seen him, and it is he that talketh with thee.

The Messiah would ask God for His inheritance and he would have complete authority over all things.

Psalm 2:8 Ask of me, and I shall give thee the heathen for thine inheritance, and the uttermost parts of the earth for thy possession.

We see this in John 17:4-24.  Read the whole passage and you will see a beautiful prayer of Jesus asking the Father for us.

John 17:24 Father, I will that they also, whom thou hast given me, be with me where I am; that they may behold my glory, which thou hast given me: for thou lovedst me before the foundation of the world.

Hebrews 1:1 God, who at sundry times and in divers manners spake in time past unto the fathers by the prophets, 2 Hath in these last days spoken unto us by his Son, whom he hath appointed heir of all things, by whom also he made the worlds;

Matt 28:18 And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth.

Blessed are those who trust in Him and those that do not perish

Psalm 2:12 Kiss the Son, lest he be angry, and ye perish from the way, when his wrath is kindled but a little. Blessed are all they that put their trust in him.

We see this truth in John 3:36 He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life: and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him.

Over and over and over again, what was written in the Old Testament about Jesus in both type and picture and directly, we see in the New Testament.  It really is amazing and shows the overall unity of the Word of God.  It also shows God’s incredible power.
