Bible Teaching is Extremely Important

Bible teaching is extremely important.  As crazy as it might sound, you would not realize that in most churches today.  Do not take me wrong I did not say all churches.  Bible teaching will convict men of sin.  Bible teaching will push and exhort Christians to change their behavior and it will stir them to do more for the Lord.  That is not the main purpose in many churches.  Many have the focus of feeding the flesh and making people feel good.  For many a good day in church is leaving with a great feeling.  It is all a very self-centered thing.  You see it in their music and light shows with people imitating the world’s rock stars on the platform.  You also see it in their teaching and preaching that will have a whole lot of human thinking and philosophy and very little of the Word of God.  As with any issue the place we need to go to get understanding is the Bible.  Let’s take a look at what the Bible teach about studying and teaching the Bible.

A study of what the Bible teaches is actually a command of God.

2Ti 2:15  Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.

This shows us that God approves of Bible study.  It shows us that Bible study is what is needed to be able to rightly divide the Word of truth.  That would also mean that the Word of truth can be wrongly divided.

Sound doctrine (what the Bible teaches) can exhort and convince gainsayers.  Bible study is required of those who proclaim the word to others.

Tit 1:9  Holding fast the faithful word as he hath been taught, that he may be able by sound doctrine both to exhort and to convince the gainsayers.

It is required of all believers

1Pe 3:15  But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts: and be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you with meekness and fear:

The only answers we have on all matters of faith and practice come from the Word of God.  You cannot give an answer to anyone unless you have the answer.  And that means Bible Study.

It is sorely needed in these days because some will depart from the faith

1Ti 4:1  Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils;

2Ti 4:2  Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine.

2Ti 4:3  For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears;

2Ti 4:4  And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables.

I have no doubt that this is the time in which we live.  Most Christians will not endure sound Bible teaching.  Instead they heap to themselves teachers who will tell them what they want to hear.  We really need more Christians who will stand up for the Lord and say no to such nonsense.

Teaching is to be shared.  One of the goals is that the truth spreads.

2Ti 2:2  And the things that thou hast heard of me among many witnesses, the same commit thou to faithful men, who shall be able to teach others also.

Bible truth is to be contended for.

Jud 1:3  Beloved, when I gave all diligence to write unto you of the common salvation, it was needful for me to write unto you, and exhort you that ye should earnestly contend for the faith which was once delivered unto the saints.

We should naturally desire it.  Every Christian should.  But there is a big difference between should and actually doing.  He tells us why we should earnestly contend in the next verse.

Jud 1:4  For there are certain men crept in unawares, who were before of old ordained to this condemnation, ungodly men, turning the grace of our God into lasciviousness, and denying the only Lord God, and our Lord Jesus Christ.

The reason is there are false teachers, men who turn the grace of our God into lasciviousness.  That is a word for fleshly desire often with a sexual nature to it.  Have you ever thought of this; the false teachers would not find an audience if Christians would earnestly contend for the faith. And that faith is known because it is written in the Bible.  That faith cannot be known or contended for without Bible Study.

It produces men and women of God.  Bible Study helps us grow as Christians.

1Pe 2:2  As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby:

Start with the milk of the Word and then advance into meat and grow thereby.  Christians who do not study the Bible simply do not grow as Christians.

1Co 16:13  Watch ye, stand fast in the faith, quit you like men, be strong.

Since we grow and get strength from Bible study, you will never be able to stand fast in the faith and be a strong without it.

God considers it honorable.

Act 17:11  These were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so.

Jesus said so

Joh 5:39  Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me.

Many times the Bible uses the word Doctrine for what the Bible teaches.

Doctrine is a Bible word.

Doctrine

  1. In a general sense, whatever is taught.
  2. The act of teaching. He taught them many things by parables, and said to them in his doctrine.
  3. Learning; knowledge. Whom shall he make to understand doctrine?
  4. The truths of the gospel in general. That they may adorn the doctrine of God our Saviour in all things.
  5. Instruction and confirmation in the truths of the gospel. 2 Tim 3.

Doctrine is talked about in a very good light in the Bible.  Any time you hear someone say bad things about Doctrine, any time you hear someone put down Doctrine, RUN!!!!   RUN for your spiritual life!!!  When they put down doctrine they are putting down God’s truth, God’s way, and God’s Word.  They do not have your best at heart.  Instead we should understand that Bible Teaching is Extremely Important.

Our attitude should be in line with what God’s Word teaches about Studying the Bible. We should respect it, spend time in it, love it, and share it.
